Data Science Transformation to oversee an insurer’s ESG roadmap
The insurance branch of a leading European banking group needed to optimize their tech stack to oversee the progress towards their ambitious Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals. Ekimetrics created the technical roadmap to turn this complex organization’s sustainability vision to reality.
What we did
Challenge
- The client expressed an urgent need to oversee their sustainability progress across different verticals (insurance contracts, investments, reassurance, and other financial services) to align with upcoming sectoral regulations and reinforce their brand position.
- The client expressed an urgent need to oversee their sustainability progress across different verticals (insurance contracts, investments, reassurance, and other financial services) to align with upcoming sectoral regulations and reinforce their brand position.
- Projects had to be prioritized and planned in line with the internal roadmaps of the client’s Sustainability (CSR) and IT teams.
Our approach
- We met with 60+ client team members across functions, from executive leadership to the implementation levels, to identify the most critical data projects to help the CSR team deliver on their sustainability roadmap.
- We then examined the client’s technical stack (infrastructure, architecture and cloud and data science capabilities) and compared them with the resources needed for the identified use cases.
- Finally, we developed an implementation strategy for the use cases, prioritizing them by potential impact on the sustainability strategy and by technical difficulty.
Outcome
- Key deliverables included a matrix of essential and advanced use cases with recommendations on how to prioritize them, and a two-year roadmap for ESG data transformation shaped around the selected use cases.
- The roadmap addressed not only the client’s tech stack, but also the resources, timing, and costs required to transform the client’s architecture and operationalize their sustainability strategy.
- The roadmap was built around the client’s more pressing sustainability concerns: understanding portfolio exposure to fossil fuels and to climate-related physical risks.

Challenge
Our client, a European banking group, was eager to fulfill its ESG promises and required a full data science transformation.
Our approach
We worked closely with their CSR, data, risk, and other teams — roughly 60 people, from the C-level to the implementation level — to understand their objectives and use cases for ESG compliance. Some use cases were mandatory, such as complying with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD); others were voluntary, such as meeting internal decarbonization targets stated in the client’s annual report. With this information, we then identified and prioritized use cases essential for different company stakeholders to drive business transformation. We audited their data science infrastructure and architecture, focusing on their existing tools and capabilities and evaluating their cloud services to determine if they could support the required use cases. And we created a detailed roadmap for 2023 and 2024 that includes:
- A matrix of essential and advanced use cases including which ones to prioritize.
- An implementation plan with detailed timelines, required personnel, and cost estimates for deploying these use cases.
- Architectural guidelines for automating data processes to reduce manual errors and enhance data reliability.
Outcome
Our hands-on approach gave us a holistic understanding of the client’s tech stack, personnel capabilities, company policies, and long-term objectives. As a result, we can now offer precise recommendations tailored to their needs, ensuring effective ESG compliance and data science transformation. To know more about our ESG & Sustainability solutions
