Dérives, 2011-2015, Emilie Brout & Maxime Marion

By manager

Emilie Brout & Maxime Marion, born in 1984 and 1982, live and work in Paris

The video installation Dérives consists of an infinite movie made up of thousands of short film clips which depict water under various forms. As ‘One can never step into the same river twice’, Dérives comes up with an innovative approach of storytelling with an automatic and never-ending editing system. Selected sequences -beforehand tagged on the basis of different criteria (year of completion, typology, etc.)- are assembled by an algorithm. The software utilizes these data and indefinitely plays real-time micro-sequences. It chains them in a well-thought out way via different stylistic means (ruptures, contrasts and crescendos). This fluctuating and meaningful editing offer a constantly renewed cinema experience: a sort of meta-storytelling including ‘Tables Turned on the Gardener’ (Louis Lumière, 1895), ‘Titanic’ (James Cameron, 1997) or ‘Knife in the water’ (Roman Polanski, 1962).
